Greater DC Cares is the District's volunteer center and the largest coordinator of volunteer services in the greater Washington region. Thousands of District residents volunteer throughout the year during the  volunteer. Days, proving that a single day of service can grow into a lifelong commitment of helping others. volunteer. Days are designated days throughout the year that provide opportunities for people to volunteer for community service projects.

Each April, Serve DC is the local lead agency for the largest service day in the world, Global Youth Service Day. In 2007, more than 35,000 District youth and their families were involved in 200 community service projects. 

DC Citizen Corps provides residents valuable emergency training and education to prepare themselves, their family, and community in case of an emergency. The program brings together local community leaders, neighborhood volunteers, and the network of first responder personnel to increase community involvement in emergency preparedness and response.
